The Greening the Gateway Cities program is an initiative to increase tree canopy in urban, more industrial areas that have lower urban tree canopy cover. Nuestras Raíces has partnered with the City of Holyoke, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and many others to achieve the goal of planting 5,000 new trees in Holyoke.
This work is made possible by a long-term energy conservation and storm-water management research study being conducted by DCR, which seeks to document the effects increasing tree canopy has on urban utilities. Based on the results of similar studies in other regions, researchers expect to see measurable reductions in summer and winter energy use, as well as in peak storm-water flows entering our sewer systems. This translates into big-time energy and utility savings, and a program that pays for itself in a little over a decade. For more information, click here.
